Marmoset monkeys overcome dyadic social dilemmas while avoiding mutual defection

چکیده

Social primates constantly face situations in which their preferences collide and they need to engineer strategies overcome conflicts of interest. Studies with chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes, have found that use competitive social dilemmas, maximizing own benefits while minimizing the loss rewards. However, little is known about how other rely more on cooperation would similar dilemmas. We therefore presented male–female pairs common marmosets, Callithrix jacchus (cooperative breeders) two experiments an action-based paradigm creates a conflict interest over access unequal reward distribution. Rather than engaging mutual defection, marmosets were able this dilemma time, by developing mix strategic behaviours (predominantly females) tolerance disadvantageous distributions males). This behavioural yielded better rewards for females. Importantly, such net outcome consistent natural history species where females, who carry high energetic burden reproduction, tend be less prosocial are receivers, rather donors, food-sharing events among adults.

Reasons for cooperation and defection in real-world social dilemmas

Interventions to increase cooperation in social dilemmas depend on understanding decision makers’ motivations for cooperation or defection. We examined these in five real-world social dilemmas: situations where private interests are at odds with collective ones. An online survey (N = 929) asked respondents whether or not they cooperated in each social dilemma and then elicited both open-ended r...

Dyadic movement synchronization while performing incongruent trajectories requires mutual adaptation

Unintentional movement synchronization is often emerging between interacting humans. In the present study, we investigate the extent to which the incongruence of movement trajectories has an influence on unintentional dyadic movement synchronization. During a target-directed tapping task, a participant repetitively moved between two targets in front of another participant who performed the same...

Vocal Learning via Social Reinforcement by Infant Marmoset Monkeys.

For over half a century now, primate vocalizations have been thought to undergo little or no experience-dependent acoustic changes during development [1]. If any changes are apparent, then they are routinely (and quite reasonably) attributed to the passive consequences of growth. Indeed, previous experiments on squirrel monkeys and macaque monkeys showed that social isolation [2, 3], deafness [...

Shared rewarding overcomes defection traps in generalized volunteer's dilemmas.

For societies to produce or safeguard public goods, costly voluntary contributions are often required. From the perspective of each individual, however, it is advantageous not to volunteer such contributions, in the hope that other individuals will carry the associated costs. This conflict can be modeled as a volunteer's dilemma. To encourage rational individuals to make voluntary contributions...
